If skin is not adequately prepped to stretch and it starts stretching rapidly, visible stretch marks can appear. Getting skin ready to stretch is the most important way to prevent stretch marks.
How to Prevent Stretch Marks
Hydrate
Skin needs to be hydrated from both the inside (drinking enough fluids) and the outside (using a hydrating moisturizer). Our favorite moisturizers for preventing stretch marks contain natural colloidal oatmeal.
Exfoliate
When you remove the dry surface layer of your skin, your moisturizer can be more effectively absorbed. Exfoliating has also been shown to boost collagen production and improve skin’s elasticity. We recommend exfoliating 2-3 times per week.
Vitamins
Vitamin C can be consumed through food or vitamin supplements. It can also be applied as a topical serum. Vitamin C has been shown to improve skin elasticity and strengthen connective tissue, which is why it is a powerhouse recommended by dermatologists for skin health. Additionally, low levels of Vitamin D have been linked to the occurrence of stretch marks. Vitamin D can be absorbed from the sun, consumed through fortified food, or consumed via a daily supplement.
How to Eliminate Existing Stretch Marks
If you have stretch marks that you are trying to eliminate, follow the same 3 steps above with emphasis on exfoliation. Removing the surface layer 2-3 times per week is a critical part of eliminating visible stretch marks. Over time, with exfoliation, hydration, and vitamin C, stretch marks will begin to fade and can eventually be eliminated.
